Longines

Longines was founded in Switzerland in 1832, and since has been known as one of the most elegant watch companies in the world. The best advertising for this company was having its watches worn personally by such stars as, Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, as well as their clocks being used at events such as gymnastics and riding. Unforgettable: Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with her noble Longines watch worn over her long white gloves.

The brand name was founded by Auguste Agassiz and Raiguel Jeune in the small Swiss town of Saint-Irmer, which was previously the centre for the art of watch making. The French word for a long narrow field referring to the property inherited by the founders, where their first company was built, inspired them to give their company its present name. The first watches of this brand were highly appraised: Ernest Francillon, the owner at this time came back from the Universal Exhibition in Paris with a bronze medal. Shortly after the turn of the century Longines began to make wrist watches, the art deco watches from the 1920's are coveted collectors pieces. Longines also conquered the air: this company was responsible for measuring time on the first transatlantic flight. A tribute to these pioneering days are the wings that still decorate the Longines Logo today. Longines is also responsible for official time measuring at horse races and the Olympic Games.
