Pilot's Watches
Pilot watches were especially designed for pilots needs, and can be recognised mostly by their simple but functional design. The first pilot watches were designed by Cartier for Alberto Santos-Dumont. The idea was to design a wrist-watch for pilots, from which not only time could be read, but also important calculations needed for their flights, this idea was soon taken over by other manufacturers. Precise time measurement during extreme conditions was the most important characteristic of pilot watches at the beginning. Apart from this, pilot watches have mostly a shockproof, solid case, as well as a contrasting dial, and mostly neo hands. This helps pilots to read the watch while flying at night. Because the watches used to be worn underneath the pilots leather flying jacket, many pilot watches had a wide wrist strap and a handy large crown, enabling easy alteration to the watch even when wearing gloves.
